Baba the master mason is responsible for the great gate which is being built this week at hotel Djenné Djenno. I complimented him on the superior shape of his hat. He immediately removed it and tried to offer it to me as a present, but I declined politely. The next morning he brought me a new one- less lived-in, less pungent but definitely less shapely too.
