This is so extraordinary. Truly hope it's good news about elephant numbers in Mali and not a sign that these two are on the run from an incident that might have frightened and broken up the Gourma herd.
indeed Richard! I had not thought of that..
But apparently, very rarely there are sightings like this. Keita, my husband, saw 2 in Madiama, a village not far from here in the late nineties.
Meanwhile, my exercise at the British Embassy in Bamako was inconclusive. I can tell you that it is not just a desk at the Canadian Embassy, but it does have its own entrance. There was noone there apart from a secretary when I delivered my letter to the Ambassador- she assured me it would be on his desk when he returned from holiday in September. I asked if they dealt with visas etc. She said no, that was still at the consulate in Dakar. " So what do you do here, then?" I asked. She said they dealt with things like "matters of security"(!) Hardly, I thought to myself, if they are using the French bulletins for the Foreign Office guidance...
There's been a huge amount of rain and flooding around Gossi. That might have disrupted the herd. . .
Good luck with the ongoing correspondence with the "British Embassy". They probably find keeping up with the security situation well-nigh impossible.
