Djenne Rocks!

There may not be any hotel guests around and perhaps my evenings are a tad lonely now and then as I re- watch old films or play computer chess. ..But during the day we are having fun in the bogolan studio: To my unspeakable surprise and joy Baba has discovered David Bowie! He has downloaded the whole lot on his telephone. There is particularly one track that gets us going: REBEL REBEL! Put on your dress! REBEL REBEL your face is mess!

Now is that a still from some classic movie or what? Glorious.

And in the meantime I have heard a truly wonderful Bowie song joined to Vaughan Williams's Fifth Symphony played by a steel band. No, really, courtesy of my friend Howard and his daughter Rowan, who joined a group of South London Trinidadians to accompany the British exhibit at the Venice Biennale. All over the world these strange connections are taking off.

It's 'The Man Who Sold the World'. The third number is 'Voodoo Ray' by A Guy Called Gerald. You get the Melodians playing the VW and then, I think, the Bowie, at the start of the little film here: http://www.vfeditions.com/product/view/129 - if Malian connections let you watch it. Complete artwork on British Council website, which I'm about to watch.

You know how to have fun, that's for certain! Of course I don't know this song, but I love this line "your face is a mess." What on earth can it mean, but then again who cares? And the photograph is beyond price.

Such joy in being alive fairly leaps out from that picture and gladdens the heart of anyone lucky enough to see it. Rock and Roll Baby, stay the teenager.

I follow you from afar, and your strength inspires. Please, no need to reply; save your precious bandwidth for bringing us more and keeping us up to date. May good fortune come.
