Wimbledon, Election campaign and Kidal

Two important things yesterday- first things first:
Murray won Wimbledon for the Brits. For the first time in 77 years the nation who invented the game claims victory. But hold on- who invented it? Was it perhaps the French? They did invent some things after all... wasn't it called  Jeu de Paume?  Anyway, I was hugely annoyed by  lack of electricity in Djenne- could therefore not witness this historic moment. Hurrah from Djenne for Andy!

Some of the rhetoric has been de trop. I can't find it now but one paper had a headline to the effect that Murray had washed away 77 years of shame. Anyway, I'm pleased.

What gets me is the press being all over him now when for a long time they were distinctly snarky about him ... and nasty about his mother, too. The mob is fickle as Shakespeare taught us.

There is quite the kerfuffle about this on the internet. Apparently, he's NOT the first to win Wimbledon in 77 years. Virginia Wade won in 1977. She was also, apparently, "the only British woman in history to have won titles at all four Grand Slam tournaments."
