Surah 93 : Ad-Dunah: The Glorious Morning Light

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

1.       By the Glorious Morning Light,

2.       And by the Night when it is still-

3.       Thy Guardian-Lord hath not forsaken thee, nor is He displeased.

4.       And verily, the hereafter will be better for thee than the present.

5.       And soon will thy Guardian-Lord give thee that wherewith thou shalt be well-pleased.

6.       Did He not find thee, and orphan, and give thee shelter and care ?

7.       And he found thee wandering , and He gave thee guidance.

8.       And He found thee in need, and made thee independent.

9.       Therefore , treat not the orphan with harshness,

10.   Nor repulse the petitioner unheard ;

11.   But the Bounty of the Lord- rehearse and proclaim !

Such atmospheric photos, and brava you for your impulsive support. Hope you don't mind my asking this, but I thought you might know Islamic law better than I do: is it enshrined in the larger constitution that a rapist of a young girl can escape prison if he marries her? This obscenity in Morocco is so troubling me - along with the 8 or 10 year old discovered in time with a suicide bomb strapped to her in Afghanistan - that I wanted an answer.

At any rate the Moroccans will HAVE to change it after a 16 year old committed suicide. Oh, this world.

Oh, how dreadful- I don't know is the answer but will ask Yelfa tomorrow- grand Marabout de Djenne and one of the two archivists- he should know!

Oh, and by the way I ought to mention that the two pictures are taken by my dear Australian friends Jan and Evan who were here and joined me for the trip to Gomitogo.

Hello again David, I have asked the Grands Marabouts de Djenné and this is what they said: There is no prison in Islamic Law. There are other forms of punishment- a married man who rapes someone is committing adultery and should be stoned. If he is not married he is committing the sin of fornication, and he should be whipped. If he offers to marry the girl he will be allowed to do so,IF THE GIRL CONSENTS and here is the crux of the matter according to the marabouts: the parents cannot and should not force a girl to marry someone. So in their eyes it is the fault of the parents that the girl committed suicide. They said that in some places a girl who has been raped will be unable to find a husband, although it is no fault of her own.
Does that help??!!

Yes, indeed, not exactly encouraging but at least there is no coercion. This statute, unfortunately, is enshrined in Moroccan law and we all have to sign petitions to help to change it.

Interestingly there was a programme on the World Service today about young people who want to leave Islam but would never tell their parents - or are excommunicated if they do. In certain countries like Iran it's a sin punishable by death. But all this stems from medieval Islamic jurisprudence. The Koran itself states that religion is a matter of choice. But most of the madrasas around the world prefer the medieval strictures.
