David
I was privileged to be present last night in the Barbican for a five star performance of more or less the best the classical music world can offer in the form of violinists and conductors: Nikolaj Znaider playing Beethoven's violin concerto which was followed by Elgar's second symphony, both conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano. I was there in the company of David Nice, music critic; great pal and the most frequent commentator on my meanderings in this journal.
I would like to give his review for the Arts Desk a five star rating too, reading as it does more like a inspired review of an exciting thriller than a performance of what some would describe as two old war horses of the classical repertory:
"The opening lightness of the Rondo, Elgar’s most progressive and
fascinating movement, proved deceptive: woodwind shrieked and the ghost
from earlier in the symphony, now all hammering juggernaut, came upon us
unawares."
Today I am not really writing myself but would like to give the stage to him. Please look in on his magisterial and luminous tribute to these marvellous performers and this glorious concert:

Love this tribute, both to great classical music and to the company in which you heard it!
Thank you Susan. It would have been lovely if you had been there too! Please note names have now been corrected in spelling...
Sophie somehow lights on joining me for some of the best concerts I've ever heard - last year, a surprise hit in Tippett from Steven Osborne and the Heath Quartet, then in December, magnificent gran diva Ermonela Jaho in Leoncavallo's Zaza, and now this. They aren't all this great! I do apologise that our Glyndebourne experience, La finta giardiniera, was such a dud, but it was a lovely day, as I remember. Always delighted to have your considered take and enthusiasm.
PS - Sue didn't too badly when she was all too briefly here with that First Night of the Proms, but its Elgar wasn't as good as this one, and The Importance of Being Earnest was better,
It is true David! I LOVED the Tippett in particular. And I am ready and willing to be taken to Glyndebourne any time you like for another attempt...
David is always interesting to hear and read on his musings, so informative.
